This month we
have a guest writer. Phil,
is one of the high school
students who regularly attends
meetings and events here at
Campus Life. He is also a
member of the S.W.A.T. Team.
So without any further ado, here
are a few thoughts from Phil.
---------------------------------------------
As children of
God we are often mocked or
persecuted, and pain will at
many times come into our lives.
Pain is a thing Satan will throw
at us to get us off track and
influence us to stop following
God. Out of pain however, can
come something many, including
Satan, might not expect.
Let’s look at Paul, in 2
Corinthians 11:23-28, where he
gives us an account of his
persecutions. He writes to the
Corinthian people that he was
“Whipped times without number”,
“The Jewish leaders gave him 39
lashes, on 5 different
occasions,”, “Three times beaten
with rods,”, “one time stoned,
and spent a night and day adrift
at sea,”, “faced dangers from
rivers and robbers,”, “faced
dangers of cities, deserts, and
the sea,”, “betrayed by false
believers, Jew and gentile.”
This account I just gave isn’t
even all of the persecutions
listed in the Bible! What kept
this man from quitting his
missionary journeys? Granted,
God directly told Paul to go on
these journeys, that would have
an impact, but I don’t think
that’s all of it.
After all these persecutions
Paul undoubtedly learned a few
things, and became less
independent and more dependant
on God, trusting in Him to solve
whatever he was going through.
For example, in Acts 16, when
Paul was in the jail of
Philippi, did Paul panic; did
Paul try and find some way out?
No! He was calm, and instead of
panicking, he and Silas, prayed
and sung hymns to God. All of
the sudden a great earthquake
came, which opened the jail
door, and undid their shackles!
Even still, with this temptation
to flee and escape jail, Paul
stays and continues to rely on
God. What’s the end you ask? Oh
nothing except that the Roman
jail guard was saved that night
and were released the next day!
God gave a purpose for Paul to
be in jail that night; in this
case it was for that Roman
guard.
So, whatever you’re going
through God has a purpose for,
no matter how doubtful things
look. Through pain, one can
learn to have more reliance on
God and which will develop
faithfulness and endurance. The
Bible confirms this, “We can
rejoice, too, when we run into
problems and trials, for we know
that they help us develop
endurance.” (Romans 5:3). It
tests and purifies your faith,
as written in 1 Peter 1:7 “These
trials will show that your faith
is genuine. It is being tested
as fire tests and purifies
gold—though your faith is far
more precious than mere gold. So
when your faith remains strong
through many trials, it will
bring you much praise and glory
and honor on the day when Jesus
Christ is revealed to the whole
world.” Rely on God, it won’t be
easy, but it will pay off. This
is also confirmed in Hebrews
12:11 “No discipline is
enjoyable while it is
happening—it’s painful! But
afterward there will be a
peaceful harvest of right living
for those who are trained in
this way.”
